Keokuk County 4-H is launching a new Livestock Judging Club open to youth in fourth through 12th grade, offering a hands-on learning opportunity for young people interested in the livestock industry regardless of their prior experience.
The club welcomes participants of all experience levels, and no previous livestock judging experience or 4-H membership is required. It is designed to be accessible to youth who are new to 4-H as well as those already involved who want to expand their knowledge.
“We are excited to offer this new opportunity to youth in Keokuk County,” said Ashley Yedlik, County Youth Coordinator. “We are incredibly thankful for the volunteers who are helping make this club possible and look forward to welcoming new members to Keokuk County 4-H.”
Members will gain hands-on experience evaluating beef, swine, sheep, and goats. Beyond livestock evaluation, participants will build public speaking confidence, strengthen critical thinking and decision-making skills, and learn how to communicate and defend their opinions effectively. Youth will also have the opportunity to compete in livestock judging contests, though competition participation is optional.
The club is a good fit for youth who currently exhibit livestock and want to deepen their knowledge, as well as those who do not own animals but are curious about the industry. Recent program achievements include a 14th place team finish at Iowa Pork Youth Judging, a 12th place finish at the Iowa State University Livestock Judging Contest, and a 7th place finish in 4-H Questions at the Iowa Beef Expo.
Meetings will be held on the second and fourth Sundays of each month from 3:00 to 4:45 p.m. at the Keokuk County Extension Office. Additional hands-on learning opportunities, including farm visits, will be scheduled at a later date. There is no cost to join or attend meetings, though youth who choose to participate in contests may be responsible for entry fees.
