The Fairfield Police Department and the Keokuk County Sheriff’s Office are warning area residents about a fraudulent notice circulating in the community that falsely claims to be an official government document regarding unpaid tolls or traffic violations.

The document, which describes itself as a “Final Notice — Court Enforcement Action” from the State of Iowa, urges recipients to make an immediate payment and often instructs them to scan a QR code to do so. Law enforcement officials say the document is a scam.

Authorities note several red flags residents should be aware of. Official court documents will not demand payment via QR codes, and government agencies do not threaten immediate enforcement action without proper service of process. The fraudulent document may also contain incorrect or mismatched court information.

Residents who receive this notice are asked not to scan the QR code and not to send any money or personal information. The notice should be deleted or discarded. Anyone who has already interacted with the document is encouraged to report the incident to their local law enforcement agency.

If you have genuine concerns about a legitimate citation or court matter, contact the court directly using verified contact information obtained independently — not from the notice itself.

Both agencies are asking community members to share this warning to help protect others from falling victim to the scam.
