The Headquarters of the 185th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion of the Iowa Army National Guard has established its new home at the Fairfield Armory, marking a new chapter for both the battalion and the community.
Led by Lieutenant Colonel Kiel Archer and Command Sergeant Major David J. Gossard, the 185th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion is a logistics and support unit whose mission is to conduct training that prepares soldiers to support the state and defend the nation. The battalion ensures that military units have the supplies, equipment, and services necessary to accomplish their missions, whether responding to a local emergency or deploying overseas.
The battalion’s ranks are filled with Citizen-Soldiers from communities across Iowa who balance civilian careers and family lives with their commitment to serve. The 185th includes combat engineers, heavy vehicle operators, mechanics, plumbers, water purification specialists, IT specialists, human resources professionals, and many more.
While the battalion headquarters is now based in Fairfield, the 185th has a broad statewide presence through several subordinate units:
- Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC), 185th CSSB — Fairfield; provides command and control for the entire battalion.
- 831st Engineer Company — Middletown and Camp Dodge; specializes in vertical and horizontal construction projects.
- 833rd Engineer Company — Ottumwa; focused on combat engineering tasks including mobility and survivability operations.
- 1133rd Transportation Company — Mason City and Iowa City; responsible for transporting cargo, equipment, and supplies.
- Company A, 1347th Division Sustainment Support Battalion — Clinton and Camp Dodge; provides general supplies, petroleum, water, and field services including laundry and showers.
- Company B, 1347th Division Sustainment Support Battalion — Knoxville and Oskaloosa; provides field maintenance and vehicle recovery.
The battalion has a history of statewide service. Members played instrumental roles in emergency responses including support during the COVID-19 pandemic and recovery efforts following the devastating 2020 Derecho.
The 185th has also wasted no time putting down roots in Fairfield, joining the Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce and engaging with the local community in several ways. The battalion participates in the Fairfield High School Veterans Day Ceremony and has established the “Warrior-Citizen” Award to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional character and dedication. Soldiers also volunteer their time supporting local initiatives such as the Lord’s Cupboard.
“The 185th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion is excited to be part of the Fairfield community and looks forward to building strong, lasting relationships with its citizens, businesses, and leaders,” the battalion said in a statement. “We are your neighbors, and we are proud to serve.”
