Some farmers finding basis opportunities in the corn market

The co-founder of AgMarket.net says continued demand for U.S. corn is bringing basis opportunities for some farmers.

Matt Bennett, who also farms in central Illinois, says growers need to be in close contact with their merchandiser.

“They just need to let their originator know, hey, I’ve got bushels here. What would it take to get whatever it is that I want?”  He says, “I had a grower in South Bend earlier this year. He actually had a 20 over basis posted at one of his facilities. They called him and said, ‘We want to buy some corn.’”

He tells Brownfield…

“He said, I know you’re posting a 20 over, so what are you willing to pay? And they said, 30 over. And then he came back to him and said, well, I’d sell some at 40 over. And they said, we’d do it for 50,000 bushels or more. And so, he ended up selling them quite a bit of corn at 40 over.”

Bennett says many farmers are still holding onto much of the record corn crop from 2025 in anticipation of better prices, but he encourages producers to know their break-evens and take advantage of opportunities as they arise.
