The Ottumwa Police Department says an arrest was made in connection to a shooting that occurred early Friday morning.
27-year-old Xavier Dennis of Ottumwa was charged with attempted murder (Class B felony), going armed with intent (Class D felony), and possession of a firearm by a felon (Class D felony).
According to Lieutenant Jason Bell, officers responded to the 300 block of Tindell Street in Ottumwa at approximately 4:10 AM on the report of a man suffering from gunshot wounds. The shooter, later identified as Dennis, fled the scene after the shooting in a vehicle, according to police.
The victim was identified as 22-year-old Deshaun Scott of St. Louis, Missouri. Scott was taken to a hospital for emergency surgery and is in stable condition, according to Bell.
At 6:26 AM, police responded to the area of North 5th Street and Pleasant Street for a vehicle that crashed into a fire hydrant. Authorities say the vehicle was the same Dennis drove to flee the scene of the shooting.
According to Bell, Dennis was later tracked to a residence on Sheffield Street at 6:39 AM. Dennis was arrested without incident.
Dennis is currently lodged in the Wapello County Jail with no bond.
