An Ottumwa man is facing multiple criminal charges after authorities say he was found with firearms and illegal drugs while subject to both a protective order and a no-contact order connected to a domestic abuse case.

According to criminal complaint records, Danny Courtney, 69, of Ottumwa, was allegedly in possession of two concealed firearms while under an active protective order issued in Wapello County on October 16, 2025. Authorities report the weapons included a Ruger 9mm semi-automatic handgun and a Henry .22 Magnum lever-action rifle. Court records indicate the protective order prohibited Courtney from possessing firearms.

Officials also allege Courtney knowingly possessed methamphetamine.

In addition, investigators say Courtney was found in possession of marijuana. The charge was enhanced due to a prior conviction.

Court documents further state that Courtney allegedly violated a no-contact order related to a domestic abuse assault case by going to the protected party’s known residence, located at 7000 Block of 247th Avenue in Blakesburg. Authorities say he was also in possession of the two concealed firearms at the time of the alleged violation.

Courtney was initially held in the Monroe County Jail on a $300 cash or surety bond. Court records show that on February 17, an order was issued for his release on his own recognizance.

Courtney is charged with:

  • Violation of a no-contact/protective order (contempt)
  • Dominion and control of a firearm or offensive weapon by a domestic abuse offender, a Class D felony
  • Possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), first offense, a serious misdemeanor
  • Possession of a controlled substance (cannabidiol), second offense.
