A man was arrested at a Casey’s gas station in Ottumwa after police say he was passed out in an idling car with his children in the vehicle.
37-year-old Yoshi Shikiko was charged with two counts of neglect or abandonment of a dependent person (Class C felony), driving while license denied or revoked (serious misdemeanor), and operating while under the influence – first offense (serious misdemeanor).
The Ottumwa Police Department says it received a call on March 9th at approximately 12:52 AM. Court records say the employees at the Casey’s on Mary Street observed a car in the parking lot that was running for over an hour. Inside the car was a man, later identified as Shikiko, who was asleep and two children.
Police say once Shikiko woke up and opened the driver’s door, an officer noticed an empty liquor bottle in the door. Court documents allege Shikiko had the odor of alcohol emitting from his person and had bloodshot, watery eyes. Shikiko allegedly failed a Field Sobriety Test and had an blood alcohol content over the legal limit of 0.08%.
The children in the vehicle were four and eight years old, according to court documents.
Police say Shikiko was charged with OWI on February 22nd and had his license revoked on March 5th.
Shikiko was arrested and transported to the Wapello County Jail. His bond was set at $22,000.
Shikiko has a preliminary hearing scheduled for March 18th. He’s been ordered not to have any contact with his two children.
