The president of the National Farmers Union says the organization’s members support engaging in respectful debates to develop strong ag policies, and keep democracy strong.
Rob Larew tells Brownfield “we have a culture right now where too often it feels like you’re either with me or against me, and there isn’t a middle ground. We need to bring back additional conversations, discussion and healthy debate if we’re going to thrive as a country.”
Congress has struggled to reauthorize a full five-year farm bill, address immigration and farm labor, and other policies in recent years, due to partisan divisions.
The roots of democracy was one of three special orders of business approved during the NFU’s delegate session at the annual convention. The two other special orders include the farm crisis and dairy policy reform.
Larew says the special orders drive his work on behalf of NFU in Washington D.C. in the year ahead.
