The Fairfield City Council has approved posting the Police Chief position for 30 days on four platforms following the recent passing of former Chief Dave Thomas.
The Personnel Committee recommended posting the position on Indeed, Zip Recruiter, the city’s website, and the Iowa League of Cities (ILOC).
Council members emphasized their hope for internal candidates while keeping the search open to all qualified applicants.
“I think certainly having somebody who currently works for the Fairfield Police Department serving as chief would be a benefit,” said Councilwoman Elizabeth Estey. “Hopefully anybody who’s currently working for the Fairfield Police Department and would like to apply for the job will do so.”
Interim Police Chief Joel Smith suggested involving the Fairfield Police Department in the hiring process, which council members strongly supported.
“That’s a really great suggestion,” council members said, noting the plan is for the Personnel Committee to review resumes and then determine how to structure involvement from FPD staff and potentially other individuals in the review process.
The council approved the initial 30-day posting period but noted they have the option to extend it another 30 to 60 days if needed to ensure sufficient applicants.
“We hope that we get sufficient resumes after 30 days, but we do have the option if we need to extend it,” said Councilman Paul Gandy.
The city has a history of hiring from within and encouraged current FPD employees to apply.
The position posting comes as the department continues to operate under interim leadership following Chief Thomas’ unexpected passing in January.
