Drivers across central and east-central Iowa should prepare for slick roads and reduced visibility as a round of snow moves into the region late Thursday.

Forecasters say precipitation will spread from western into central Iowa during the afternoon and evening, possibly beginning as rain or a rain-snow mix before transitioning to all snow overnight. Most areas are expected to receive between 2 and 5 inches by early Friday morning, though a narrow band could see heavier totals.

The advisory runs from 6 p.m. Thursday until 6 a.m. Friday and includes communities such as Des Moines, Ames, Waterloo, Marshalltown, Newton, Indianola, and Pella, along with surrounding towns.

Officials warn that hazardous conditions could affect both the Thursday evening commute and early Friday travel. Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and use caution if heading out during the advisory period.

Travelers can check current road conditions through the state’s 511 system before departing.
