An individual faces multiple charges following a reported trespassing incident that escalated during an arrest, court documents show.
On February 8 at approximately 6:51 a.m., the Ottumwa Police Department responded to a report of a trespasser in the 1000 block of Tuttle Street.
According to a criminal complaint, officers arrested Michelle Brown, 36, of Ottumwa, for trespassing. Court records state that while officers attempted to place Brown in handcuffs, she began to physically resist arrest by pulling away, screaming, spitting, and dropping to the ground as “dead weight,” requiring officers to carry her to a patrol vehicle.
Law enforcement reports indicate that while officers were loading Brown into the rear inmate compartment of the patrol car, she again pulled away, dropped to the ground, and dug her fingernails into the arresting officer’s right calf.
Brown was transported to the Wapello County Jail, where she is being held on a $2,500 cash or surety bond. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for February 18.
Brown is charged with assault on persons in certain occupations, an aggravated misdemeanor, and interference with official acts, a simple misdemeanor.
