Representative Helena Hayes officially submitted her nomination papers to run for re‑election to the Iowa House of Representatives, representing District 88, which includes Mahaska, Keokuk, and Jefferson counties. Hayes has served as the Republican nominee in the Iowa House since 2023 and is seeking a third term.
“Five years ago, when I first ran for office, I told every person I met that Mahaska, Keokuk, and Jefferson counties are filled with conservative, biblically-minded people who want accurate representation in Des Moines,” Hayes said. “Serving this district has been a tremendous honor, and I am excited for this opportunity to continue representing these values as I seek re‑election.”
Beginning her first term, Hayes partnered with the Mahaska County Attorney to champion landmark legislation to criminalize the creation and distribution of harmful deepfake pornography. The bill garnered overwhelming bipartisan support in the legislature and was signed into law. This early testament to her proactive leadership continues in many other forms of legislation as she serves as a member on the following House committees: Education, Veterans Affairs, Workforce and Development, International Relations and as Vice-Chair of the Natural Resources Budget Subcommittee.
Throughout her tenure, Representative Hayes has remained steadfast in her commitment to conservative principles, defending the sanctity of life, strengthening families, and safeguarding Constitutional rights.
A lifelong Iowan, Helena has been married to her husband Dan for 32 years. The couple have three grown children and two grandchildren. Her deep roots in family and community guide her service and drive her passion for positive, principled leadership.
