Officers were called to a home following a domestic dispute that escalated into an alleged assault, resulting in law enforcement intervention and criminal charges.

On February 21, at approximately 11:23 p.m., the Ottumwa Police Department was dispatched to the 1000 block of E. Mary Street in response to a domestic assault.

Upon arrival, officers reported that Joshua Johnson, 43, of Ottumwa, allegedly shoved the victim to the ground. Court documents indicate that Johnson and the victim had been married for approximately one week and reside together at the same address. Johnson has a prior conviction for a simple misdemeanor domestic assault dated April 4, 2006.

During the arrest, officers noted that Johnson tensed up and attempted to pull away from fully uniformed law enforcement. While officers were attempting to place him in handcuffs, Johnson allegedly resisted and intentionally interfered with the officers’ lawful duties.

Johnson was transported to the Wapello County Jail and later released on a $2,000 cash/surety bond. A no-contact order was issued on February 22.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 4. Johnson faces charges of Domestic Abuse Assault – 2nd Offense, an aggravated misdemeanor, and Interference with Official Acts, a simple misdemeanor.
