OPD: Man Arrested after Early Morning Stabbing

The Ottumwa Police Department says a man is in custody after an alleged stabbing early Tuesday morning.

20-year-old Joey Michael of Ottumwa was charged with the following:

  • Willful injury – causing serious injury (Class C felony)
  • Assault while displaying a dangerous weapon (Aggravated Misdemeanor)
  • Public intoxication (Simple Misdemeanor)

At approximately 1:40 AM, court records say Michael stabbed a man in the chest and arm with a fixed blade knife. The alleged incident took place on the 1200 block of West Second Street.

According to authorities, officers located Michael on the 1100 block of West Second Street. After encountering the suspect, police noted Michael displayed red, bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, unsteady balance, and the odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath. Court documents say Michael admitted to drinking an entire bottle of an alcoholic beverage.

Michael was arrested and transported to the Wapello County Jail. His bond was set at $50,000.

Michael has a preliminary hearing scheduled for March 5th.
