Infrastructure investments key as soybean meal exports surge

Herman spoke to Brownfield at ISA’s recent Farm Forward Conference in Des Moines. That interview can be heard below:

An ag trade specialist says exports of U.S. soybean meal have been significantly increasing.

Matt Herman, chief officer of demand and advocacy with the Iowa Soybean Association, says while whole-soybean exports are down year-over-year, “What we are seeing is just growth in the soybean meal export. Many people two and three years ago were wringing their hands asking how we’re going to move all this soybean meal through the export channels that have historically been set up for whole beans. And we’ve done that without missing a beat.”

He tells Brownfield investments in port infrastructure will be critical moving forward.

“You see investments in the Gulf Coast, Washington state and on the West Coast to be able to move more and more soybean meal out of this country.”

According to ISA, the expansion of soybean processing in the U.S. has been driven by the growth in demand for renewable diesel. Herman says as production of soybean oil increases, meal production also moves higher.
