Snow, cold temperatures may add strain to pork supply chain

Pork producers in the southeastern U.S. are bracing for another winter storm.

Roy Lee Lindsey is CEO of the North Carolina Pork Council and executive director of the Virginia Pork Council.  He tells Brownfield last weekend’s snow and ice caused minimal disruption to the movement of hogs in the region.

“What we’re staring at right now is another winter storm warning, and this time they’re telling us we’ll get snow. Snow’s typically not too bad, but it’s been cold enough that any snow that falls is going to stick and it’s going to stick to the streets and the roads. And that’s going to create additional challenges for us.”

He says the first winter blast, which consisted mostly of sleet and ice, did disrupt the distribution of products.

“In other parts of the country because of travel challenges there, and because of road conditions elsewhere. And because of trucks that were delayed because of road conditions elsewhere.”

Lindsey says with pork production and processing being a “just in time delivery system,” the winter storm has caused some backups.
