Naig announces Iowa Farm Act

Iowa Agriculture Secretary Mike Naig has announced plans to introduce the Iowa Farm Act during the 2026 state legislative session.

He tells Brownfield the comprehensive package is similar to a federal farm bill.

“We think it’s right that in a state like Iowa where agriculture is such an important driver of our economy and society, that we should have a focus point where we talk about comprehensively things that are happening in ag and need to be done. And that things can move as a package and get that kind of attention and focus.”

He says the legislation reflects priorities raised directly by farmers, agribusinesses, and stakeholders in the state.

“Things like expanding economic opportunities broadly, how do we build markets out? We’re looking at some tax relief and fairness provisions, we want to look at workforce and beginning farmer provisions. We’re looking at biosecurity, protecting our animal industries in particular.”

Naig says he’s looking forward to working with the Legislature and Governor Reynolds to get the Iowa Farm Act enacted to show strong support for agriculture, the cornerstone of the state’s economy.
