A Wapello County man is facing additional charges after authorities say he failed to comply with Iowa’s sex offender registry requirements during a traffic stop earlier this year.
On August 2 at approximately 9:25 p.m., the Wapello County Sheriff’s Department conducted a traffic stop involving Jacob Dieters, 20, of Blakesburg. During the stop, deputies reviewed Dieters’ sex offender registry file and discovered he was not in compliance with required reporting provisions.
Court documents state Dieters was previously convicted of Telephone Dissemination of Obscene Material and, as a result of that conviction, was ordered to comply with the Iowa State Sex Offender Registry. Authorities determined Dieters failed to provide the sheriff’s office with required vehicle information, including the vehicle identification number and Iowa registration plate number.
Under Iowa law, registered sex offenders are required to report all vehicle information, including license plate numbers and permanent identification numbers. According to court records, Dieters admitted to deputies that he had been driving the vehicle for approximately one to two years and that the vehicle was titled in his name.
Dieters is scheduled to return to court on January 22 for a pretrial conference and jury trial setting, followed by a plea and sentencing hearing on January 29.
Dieters is currently being held in the Wapello County Jail on earlier charges of sex offender registration violation, first offense aggravated misdemeanor, and sex offender providing false information, first offense aggravated misdemeanor.
