The Friends of Ottumwa’s Parks Foundation will kick off fundraising efforts to construct nine new pickleball courts in Troeger Park, across from Bridge View Center, on Giving Tues- day, December 2. In August, the Ottumwa City Council approved Troeger Park as the site for future outdoor pickleball courts. Since then, Friends of Ottumwa’s Parks has been planning and seeking cost estimates. The estimated cost of a nine-court facility is $200,000.
Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the USA, drawing players across generations. Ottumwa currently lacks dedicated public courts that can serve the rising demand, leaving residents without an outdoor venue to play, compete, and gather. This facility will not only provide a much-needed recreational outlet but also create opportunities for classes, leagues, and tournaments, strengthening ties across the region.
The courts will be open to the public, ensuring broad accessibility. “These years have been consequential for our foundation. Just recently, in collaboration with the City of Ottumwa and the Ottumwa School District, we were able to deliver the new Dan Staggs Family Tennis Courts, and we are confident that in 2026 we can open these new pickleball courts for public use in the City of Ottumwa. That will be a major win for all of us and will fit perfectly with the rest our outdoor amenities in the vicinity.”

The site design will emphasize durability, accessibility, and a welcoming layout suitable for both be- ginners and competitive players. As a new recreational anchor, the upgraded Troeger Park facility will promote healthier lifestyles, attract visitors, and boost local tourism, while enhancing Ottumwa’s image as a community investing in quality-of-life improvements. The goal is to complete construction in 2026, with the courts becoming a long-term asset for residents and visitors alike.
