Health and wildlife officials have confirmed recent cases of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in the region. While the overall risk to the public remains low, residents are encouraged to take simple precautions to reduce potential exposure and help limit the spread of the virus.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) advises the public to follow these safety guidelines:

  • Avoid handling sick or dead birds
  • Keep pets and livestock away from affected birds
  • Do not bring wild birds into homes or enclosed spaces
  • Wash hands thoroughly if accidental contact occurs

Residents who observe several dead birds in one area or notice birds behaving unusually are urged to report the activity to the Iowa DNR at 515-725-8200.

Remaining vigilant and following these recommendations can help protect wildlife, domestic animals, and public health.
