An Ottumwa man faces multiple charges after police say he attempted to rob a residence and assaulted a pair of officers.
36-year-old Mitchell Schlote was charged with the following:
- Assault of persons of certain occupations – bodily injury (Class D felony)
- Disarming a peace officer (Class D felony)
- Third-degree burglary (Class D felony)
- Assault on persons of certain occupations (Aggravated misdemeanor)
- Interference with official acts – bodily injury (Serious misdemeanor)
On November 7th at approximately 9:07 AM, court records say Schlote was observed entering a garage building on the 500 block of Camille Street in Ottumwa with the intentions of stealing property.
During his arrest on November 7th, Schlote allegedly resisted by refusing to lay on his stomach and put his arms behind his back. Officials say Schlote quickly rolled on to his back and swung his fist, striking an officer from the Ottumwa Police Department in the face. Schlote is accused of punching another officer multiple times, causing an injury to the top of the officer’s head.
According to court documents, an officer warned Schlote that he was going to be tasered. When the officer produced a taser, authorities say Schlote attempted to grab it.
Court records say one officer suffered a knee injury and another sustained knee and elbow injuries during Schlote’s arrest.
Schlote was tranported to the Wapello County Jail where he is being held on a $10,000 bond.
Schlote has a preliminary hearing scheduled for November 18th.
