Van Buren County showed tremendous resilience Thursday night, October 2nd, overcoming a first-set loss and multiple deficits to defeat Danville 3-1 (24-26, 26-24, 25-20, 26-24) and improve to 16-10 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
Milestone Celebrations
Before the match, the Warriors honored two standout players who have reached impressive career milestones.
Sophia Jirak was recognized for surpassing 1,000 career assists, a milestone she achieved late last season. Jirak, who now has over 1,500 career assists and counting, also holds two school records: single-match assists and assists in a season, according to her mother.
Marlee Mertens received her milestone poster for reaching 500 career digs. The defensive specialist and offensive threat continues to add to that total with each match.
Ashlynn Huff is also approaching a significant milestone, nearing 500 career kills if she hasn’t already achieved it.
Congratulations to all of you on your success.
A Tale of Two Halves
The Warriors stumbled out of the gate in the opening set, battling service errors and falling behind 9-18 before mounting a late comeback. Despite tying the score at 22-22, 23-23, and 24-24, Van Buren County couldn’t close, falling 24-26. The Warriors were plagued by five service errors in the set, though they managed 15 kills.
The second set looked like déjà vu as Van Buren County fell behind 19-24, seemingly on the verge of a two-set deficit. But a crucial service run by Marlee Mertens sparked an incredible 7-0 rally to steal the set 26-24. The Warriors cleaned up their serve receive game, committing just two service errors while recording 14 kills.
Van Buren County seized momentum in the third set, jumping out to early leads of 7-3 and 11-6. The Warriors maintained control throughout and closed out the set 25-20 with nine kills and just two service errors.
The fourth set featured multiple lead changes before Van Buren County pulled ahead 22-16. Danville fought back to tie at 24-24, but the Warriors held their nerve to finish 26-24 and secure the victory.
Standout Performances
Huff led the offensive attack with a match-high 18 kills and added one ace. Mertens was close behind with 17 kills and two aces, including her pivotal service run in the second set. Daphny Wells contributed nine kills and two aces in a well-rounded performance.
Aida Troutman provided five kills and key blocks at the net, while Jirak and Lexie Wiley each added an ace. Wiley, Teagan Sickels, Wells, Huff, and Mertens all provided essential back-row support with numerous digs.
Ali Pedretti and Kailey Chaplin gained valuable playing time and contributed to the team effort, with Chaplin adding one kill.
Looking Ahead
Van Buren County will face their toughest test of the season next, traveling to second-ranked Holy Trinity Catholic for the fourth meeting between the two schools this season. The Crusaders have won all three previous matchups, making this a crucial opportunity for the Warriors to prove they can compete with one of the top teams in the state.
