The Van Buren County Warriors volleyball team delivered a commanding performance at the SEISC Tournament in pool play on Thursday, September 25th, sweeping all three matches to finish first in their pool and earn advancement to Saturday’s championship rounds at Southeastern Community College in Burlington.
The Warriors improved to 14-8 on the season with their perfect 3-0 pool play performance, setting up a crucial semifinal matchup against Mediapolis at 5:00 PM on Saturday. A victory would advance them to face the winner of Holy Trinity Catholic versus Central Lee in the tournament semifinals.

Game 1: Dominant Start Against Lone Tree
Van Buren County opened pool play with an emphatic 21-11, 21-9 victory over Lone Tree, establishing the tone for their tournament run. The Warriors controlled both sets from start to finish, showcasing the balanced attack that would define their entire day.
Marlee Mertens led the offensive charge with 7 kills, while Ashlynn Huff contributed 5 kills and 1 ace. Lexie Wiley dominated from the service line with an impressive 5 aces and added 1 kill, while Teagan Sickels chipped in with 1 ace. Aida Troutman rounded out the scoring with 1 kill.
Game 2: Weathering the Storm Against Hillcrest Academy
The Warriors faced their first real test of the day against Hillcrest Academy, pulling out a hard-fought 21-14, 21-19 victory that required their best effort to avoid a third set.
Huff continued her excellent play with 4 aces and 5 kills, while Mertens added 4 kills to the attack. Daphny Wells emerged as a key contributor with 5 kills, and Sickels provided 2 kills. Sophia Jirak and Troutman each added 1 kill to the balanced offensive effort.
The second set proved particularly challenging, with Hillcrest pushing the Warriors to the brink before Van Buren County pulled away for the victory. This competitive match served as valuable preparation for the tougher tests that lay ahead in the tournament bracket.
Game 3: Statement Victory Over Host West Burlington
The Warriors saved their best performance for the pool play finale, defeating host West Burlington 15-21, 21-18, 15-8 in a thrilling three-set match that showcased their resilience and potential.
This victory held special significance as a rematch of an earlier season encounter where Van Buren County had defeated West Burlington in five sets at home. Knowing the Falcons would be motivated on their home court, the Warriors were prepared for a battle.
Mertens and Huff delivered spectacular offensive performances that proved to be the difference in the match. Mertens dominated the net with 11 kills, while Huff contributed 9 kills and 1 ace in a commanding display.
Wells provided excellent support with 4 kills, while Jirak added 1 ace and 2 kills. Sickels contributed 1 ace and 1 kill, with Troutman adding 1 kill to complete the balanced attack.
The pivotal moment in the West Burlington match came during the second set when Sickels went on a crucial service run. With West Burlington’s key offensive player Kaylee Webb, who had 17 kills in the match, relegated to the back row and unable to contribute offensively, the Warriors seized control of the set and ultimately the match momentum. This strategic awareness and ability to capitalize on opponent rotations demonstrated the tactical maturity that separates good teams from championship contenders.
Throughout the tournament, Jirak orchestrated the Warriors’ offense with numerous assists, demonstrating the court vision and leadership that makes the team’s attack so effective. Her ability to distribute the ball and find the hot hand proved crucial in all three matches.
Wiley anchored the defensive effort with outstanding dig totals throughout the night, consistently extending rallies and providing the foundation for the Warriors’ offensive opportunities.
