The 4th-ranked Fairfield Trojans tennis team completed another dominant season by capturing their 2nd consecutive Southeast Conference Championship with a convincing 7-2 victory over Burlington on Monday. The triumph capped off a remarkable campaign that saw the Trojans finish with a perfect 9-0 regular season record and an astounding 76-5 individual match record.

The Trojans’ success this season has been nothing short of spectacular. Across 81 dual meet matches played throughout the regular season, Fairfield players lost just 5 individual contests, compiling an impressive 76-5 record. This level of consistency and excellence has become the hallmark of the program, which has now achieved back-to-back years with both a conference championship and an undefeated regular season.

The team’s depth and talent were on full display against Burlington, with multiple players contributing to the championship-clinching victory. The Trojans demonstrated their strength across both singles and doubles competition, winning 7 of the 9 total matches played.

Fairfield’s singles lineup proved too strong for Burlington, winning 5 of 6 matches. Poojita Mukadam set the tone with an 8-2 victory over Ava Moffett, while Natalie Steele followed with an 8-3 win against Ava Fawcett. The dominance continued with Ria Ross defeating Leah Sieren 8-1, and Sriya Yammanur matching that score with an 8-1 victory over Ruby Orr.

Faeven Gebremariam capped the singles success with another 8-1 triumph, this time over Sophia Pettit. The only singles loss came from Tula Sorflaten, who fell to Mylee Stiefel 0-8, but the team’s depth in the top of the lineup clinched the team win for the Trojans without needing doubles.

The doubles competition provided some of the match’s most exciting moments. Ross and Yammanur dominated their opponents, defeating the Burlington duo of Moffett and Fawcett with a commanding 8-0 shutout victory.

The most thrilling match of the day came in the 2nd doubles position, where Mukadam and Sorflaten faced Sieren and Orr in a marathon battle. The Trojan duo were up early in the match with a score of 5-2, but couldn’t hang on as the Grayhounds clawed back in. After splitting sets to force a tiebreaker, the Fairfield pair prevailed 9-8, winning the decisive tiebreak 12-10 in a match that showcased the mental toughness and resilience that has defined this championship team.

The lone doubles loss came from Mareyn Dunkin and Gebremariam, who fell 5-8 to Pettit and Stiefel in a competitive duel, but by then the team victory was already secured. Dunkin stepped in for Steele in doubles as she left to be with the volleyball team after her singles victory.

With the team championship now secured, the Trojans will shift their focus to individual honors. Tomorrow, September 10th, the team travels to Burlington for the Southeast Conference tournament, where players will compete for singles and doubles titles in their respective positions. The individual tournament represents another opportunity for the talented Trojans roster to showcase the skills that have made them one of the state’s elite programs. Given their dominant regular season performance and championship pedigree, Fairfield figures to be well-represented in the individual title races.

With individual championships on the horizon and postseason play approaching, the Trojans have positioned themselves as serious contenders for even greater honors this fall. Their back-to-back conference titles serve as both a celebration of past success and a foundation for future championship aspirations.
