Lisa Elaine Miller, a 15-year-old from Burlington, Iowa, was reported missing on October 3, 1977, after leaving home following a breakup with her boyfriend. Her parents described her as a “very quiet girl” who had issues with running away and had been under protective supervision due to habitual truancy.

On October 9, her body was discovered in a wooded area near Sullivan Slough Road, about 3.5 miles southeast of Burlington, by two teenagers who were trying to free their vehicle from a ditch. Authorities noted that Lisa was found face down, dressed in jeans, a hooded sweatshirt, and a blue jean jacket, with visible bruises on her chest and throat, suggesting possible foul play.

The Des Moines County Sheriff, Robert D. Glick, initially classified her death as suspicious and treated it as a homicide, even though autopsy results did not show extreme injuries. Investigators found shotgun shells nearby, but it was unclear if they were related to the case, as there were no gunshot wounds on Lisa.

Despite an extensive investigation, including a mobile crime lab team from the BCI, no suspects emerged, and authorities struggled to determine the exact cause of death. The lack of clear evidence and uncertainties surrounding the circumstances of her death left the case open and unresolved, leaving her family and the community seeking answers.
