The 4th ranked Fairfield Trojans girls tennis team delivered a statement performance Thursday evening, defeating previously unbeaten Burlington 7-2 in a highly anticipated conference matchup between two of the area’s top programs. Fairfield entered the match with a perfect 3-0 record while Burlington brought an impressive 4-0 mark to the courts. The clash lived up to expectations, featuring several competitive matches that showcased the depth and talent of both squads.
Singles Competition
The Trojans dominated the singles competition, claiming 5 of 6 matches. Leading the charge was senior Poojita Mukadam, who dispatched Burlington’s Ava Moffett 6-1, 6-1 at the number 1 position. Mukadam’s commanding performance set the tone for what was to follow. Mukadam unfortunately ended her streak of being perfect in singles, but she still got the victory in the end.
Natalie Steele decided she’ll complete the sweep instead in singles, delivering perhaps the most dominant performance of the day, blanking Leah Sieren 6-0, 6-0 at the 2nd position matchup.
Ria Ross continued Fairfield’s strong showing with a solid 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ava Fawcett at the 3rd position.
Sriya Yammanur battled through a competitive two-set match against Ruby Orr, winning 6-3, 7-6 (8-6). The tiebreaker victory proved crucial for Fairfield’s overall success with this 4th position victory.
At the 5th position, Mareyn Dunkin provided one of the most exciting matches of the afternoon, defeating Sophia Pettit 6-0, 6-7 (4-7), 10-5 in a match that featured a dramatic comeback from Pettit before Dunkin closed it out in the super tiebreaker to clinch the team victory without needing doubles.
Burlington’s lone singles victory came at the 6th position, where Mylee Stiefel defeated Faeven Gebremariam 6-3, 0-6, 7-10 in another thrilling 3-set battle.
Doubles Competition
The doubles competition proved equally competitive, with Fairfield taking 2 of 3 matches to add to our team score for the day.
At 1st doubles, the pairing of Mukadam and Steele continued their strong individual performances, teaming up to defeat Moffett and Fawcett 6-1, 6-0. Their chemistry and individual skills proved too much for Burlington’s top duo.
The 2nd doubles team of Ross and Yammanur added another point for the Trojans with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Sieren and Orr. The straight-set win showcased the depth of Fairfield’s lineup.
Burlington managed to salvage the 3rd doubles position, as Pettit and Stiefel overcame Dunkin and Gebremariam 7-5, 3-6, 9-11. The hard-fought victory from Burlington prevented a complete sweep for doubles but wasn’t enough to change the match outcome.
Looking Ahead
With the victory, Fairfield improves to 4-0 on the season and hands Burlington its first loss, dropping the Grayhounds to 4-1. The win positions the Trojans well in conference standings and demonstrates their potential as they continue through the season.
Coach Dunkin noted that this may have ended Fairfield’s perfect season with the sweep streak from the first 3 matches – but their winning streak continues strong. JV players also got valuable match experience for what proved to be a great night overall.
The match served as an excellent measuring stick for both programs, with several matches extending to 3 sets and super tiebreakers. The combination of strong individual performances and solid doubles play suggest the Trojans may have the balance needed for sustained success throughout the remainder of the season.
One thing for sure is they will need to be better than solid tomorrow on Saturday. Fairfield is included in a 15-team field with top ranked teams from across the state, including 7 ranked in the top 10 for Class 1A. Come out and support the girls in what looks to be one of the best tournaments of the regular season, and possibly even a postseason preview of the state tournament with this stacked group of teams all in 1 place.
