An Ottumwa woman faces multiple charges after allegedly hitting a pedestrian with a car early Thursday morning while she was intoxicated.
21-year-old Maquenzie Brogdon has been charged with serious injury by vehicle – OWI (Class D felony), operating while intoxicated – first offense (serious misdemeanor), and possession of a controlled substance – marijuana first offense (serious misdemeanor).
At approximately 1:50 AM, court records say the Ottumwa Police Department received a call from Brogdon requesting emergency medical staff to South Webster Street, and mentioned that she hit a person with her vehicle.
According to court documents, authorities encountered a female victim who suffered multiple fractures to her pelvis and internal bleeding. The victim’s current status is unknown.
Authorities noted Brogdon had the odor of alcohol and marijuana emanating from her person. Brogdon agreed to take a Field Sobriety test but police say she couldn’t complete it due to severe balance issues and an unsteady gait. Brogdon admitted to law enforcement that she consumed alcohol and was hysterical with little control over her emotions, according to the criminal complaint.
Police say Brogdon provided a breath sample on the DataMaster that registered as 0.144% BAC, nearly twice the legal limit. Officials also searched Brogdon’s personal bag and allegedly found a 3.6 grams of marijuana in it.
Brogdon was arrested and transported to the Wapello County Jail.
