The New London Community School District announced Wednesday that it has made the difficult decision to cancel the remainder of the high school football season due to mounting injury concerns that have significantly reduced the team’s roster.
Superintendent Chad Wahls made the announcement in a letter to the community yesterday, explaining that the decision came after careful consultation with coaching staff, athletic trainers, and school administration.
“This decision was not made lightly,” Wahls stated. “Unfortunately, a growing number of injuries among our players has significantly reduced our roster, raising serious concerns about the health, safety, and well-being of our student-athletes. While we value competition and school spirit, ensuring student safety must remain our top priority.”
Safety First Approach
The decision reflects a growing trend among high schools nationwide to prioritize student-athlete safety over the continuation of seasons when injury concerns mount. With football participation already declining in many areas, schools are increasingly willing to make difficult decisions when player welfare is at risk.

Senior Recognition to Continue
Despite the season’s early conclusion, the district will still honor its senior football players, along with seniors from cheerleading, marching band, and volleyball programs. The Senior Recognition Night has been scheduled for Tuesday, October 7, prior to the varsity volleyball game against West Burlington.
The combined recognition ceremony will allow the community to celebrate all fall senior athletes and participants, ensuring they receive the acknowledgment their dedication deserves despite the football season’s premature end.
Homecoming Proceeds with Modifications
In a positive development for school spirit, New London announced that Homecoming Week will continue as originally planned, beginning this Sunday with the traditional kickball game. The district has made one key modification to accommodate the football cancellation.
“The only change to the schedule is that the Homecoming King and Queen will now be crowned at Boom Night, following the parade,” Wahls explained. The evening will also feature the boys’ volleyball game and powderpuff football, maintaining the celebratory atmosphere of the traditional homecoming celebration.
The decision to continue with homecoming activities demonstrates the district’s commitment to maintaining school traditions and providing students with important social and community experiences, even in the face of athletic program challenges.
