The Fairfield Community School District is taking proactive steps to address the ongoing need for qualified school bus drivers by offering a low-cost training program that removes many of the financial barriers typically associated with obtaining a commercial driver’s license.
The district announced it will provide Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) in partnership with certified district staff, covering a significant portion of the costs to make the opportunity more accessible to community members interested in serving local students.
Cost-Effective Path to Certification
The complete ELDT process typically costs $1,051 per person, but the district will subsidize much of that expense to reduce the financial burden on applicants. For those who already hold a CDL A or B license, the cost drops to just $500.
“We recognize how important it is to have reliable, well-trained bus drivers, and we want to make this opportunity accessible for people who are ready to step up and serve their community,” said Matt Tyler, Director of Operations for Fairfield Schools. “This course offers a streamlined and convenient path to certification, with training on our own buses. Because it is held at our facility, it also reduces travel time and expenses.”
Comprehensive Training Program
The training program is designed to provide thorough preparation while maintaining efficiency. Participants must first obtain a CDL permit by passing written tests at the licensing bureau before beginning the ELDT coursework.
The training includes three key components:
- 17 hours of online coursework with a test
- 3 hours of in-person instruction
- 20 hours of behind-the-wheel training with district transportation staff
Once participants complete the training, they will take the final CDL B exam in Ottumwa, which includes school bus and passenger endorsements. The entire training process takes approximately four days, making it a relatively quick path to certification for those committed to the program.

Tyler emphasized that the program reflects the district’s commitment to both safety and community investment.
“Safety is our top priority, and good drivers are essential. We are committed to investing in the people who are ready to take on this vital role,” he said.
By conducting the training at the district’s own facility with district buses and staff, Fairfield Schools is able to ensure quality instruction while also making the program more convenient for local residents. The on-site training eliminates the need for participants to travel significant distances or take time away from other responsibilities.
