The Fairfield volleyball team put together a dominant performance at the WACO Tournament on September 4, sweeping all three matches to improve their season record to 8-2. The Trojans showcased balanced offensive production, stellar serving, and consistent defense throughout the quad featuring New London, WACO, and Cardinal.
Fairfield 2-0 New London (21-17, 21-14)
Fairfield opened the tournament with a solid 2-set victory over New London. Senior setter Faith Jones orchestrated the offense with 15 assists, while the attack was led by Leah Helmick and Natalie Steele, who each contributed 6 kills. Jaden Haynes added 3 kills as the Trojans committed just 9 kill errors in the match.
Defensively, Isabel McCready anchored the back row with 7 digs, supported by Mallory Wigle’s 4 digs. The serving game was particularly effective, with the team posting an impressive 85.7% serving efficiency. Steele led the service attack with 4 aces, while Iris Lane added 3 aces, and both Wigle and Helmick contributed 1 ace each.
Fairfield 2-0 WACO (21-15, 21-12)
The match against host WACO proved to be the most competitive of the day, with Fairfield facing early deficits in both sets. The Trojans trailed 7-8 in the first set and 6-7 in the second set before rallying to win convincingly in both frames.
Jones had her best distributing performance of the tournament with 20 assists, setting up an offense that saw Helmick lead with 7 kills and Maddy Martin contribute 6 kills. Steele added 4 kills, Elyse Setterstrom had 2 kills, and Bella Buckley chipped in 1 kill. Despite 11 kill errors, the Trojans’ offensive balance proved too much for WACO.
The defensive effort was outstanding, led by McCready’s 8 digs. Wigle contributed 6 digs, Jones added 6 digs of her own, Lexi Mast had 5 digs, and Lane recorded 4 digs. At the service line, Mast led the way with 3 aces, while Wigle, Steele, and McCready each added 1 ace. The team’s serving efficiency improved to 89.5% against WACO.
Fairfield 2-0 Cardinal (21-6, 21-4)
Fairfield saved their most dominant performance for last, overwhelming Cardinal in straight sets with the most lopsided scores of the tournament. The Trojans’ depth was on full display as 8 different players recorded kills.
Jones managed the offense with 12 assists, spreading the attack among multiple contributors. Martin led with 3 kills, while Steele and both Haynes and Setterstrom contributed 2 kills each. Buckley, Ella Bentler, and Helmick each added 1 kill. The balanced attack was highly efficient with just 4 kill errors.
McCready continued her consistent defensive play with 7 digs, while Wigle, Jones, and Mast each contributed 2 digs. The serving dominance reached its peak with a remarkable 95.1% efficiency. Jones led with 3 aces, and both Lane and Wigle added 2 aces each.
With the tournament sweep, Fairfield moves to 8-2 on the season and carries significant momentum into their next challenge. The Trojans will travel to Washington for a conference matchup tomorrow for an approximate 7:15 start time, looking to continue their strong play against good competition.
