Fairfield’s girls tennis team will be well represented when the Class 1A State Individual Tournament begins Wednesday, October 1st, at the Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Complex in Iowa City.
Senior Poojita Mukadam, ranked eighth in the state, opens singles play against Kuemper Catholic’s Charlotte Schwabe, ranked fourth. Mukadam has been one of the Trojans’ most consistent performers this season, facing a player with a 16–2 record at the position one singles spot and a 20–3 singles mark overall.
Junior Natalie Steele will also compete in singles, matching up against Harika Cakinberk of North Polk. Cakinberk enters with 17 wins at the top position and a 25–7 overall singles record.
In doubles, juniors Ria Ross and Sriya Yammanur drew a tough opening round matchup against Wahlert Catholic’s senior duo of Annie Elbert and Claire King.
Fairfield Head Cach Travis Dunkin mentioned the opening-round draws give the Trojans a reasonable chance to advance, especially since they avoided the highest-seeded opponents early on. They acknowledged, however, that the second round will bring much tougher competition.
