On August 6, 2011, U.S. Navy SEAL Jon T. (J.T.) Tumilson of Rockford, Iowa, made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in Wardak Province, Afghanistan. He was one of 30 Americans and 8 Afghans killed when a CH-47 Chinook helicopter was shot down—marking one of the deadliest days for U.S. forces during the Afghan War.

Born in Osage and raised in Rockford, Tumilson was a determined and focused young man. At just 15 years old, while attending Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock High School, he penned a school paper laying out his dream: to become a Navy SEAL. His longtime friend, Scott Nichols, once said, “J.T. was going to be a Navy SEAL come hell or high water.”

That dream became reality in April 2002 when Tumilson graduated from the rigorous Underwater Demolition/SEAL School in Coronado, California. Over the next nine years, he served with distinction in multiple Special Warfare Units across both U.S. coasts.

When news of his passing reached his hometown, more than 1,000 mourners filled the RRMR High School gym to honor his life. In a moment that captured hearts across the nation, Tumilson’s loyal Labrador retriever, Hawkeye, walked in with the family and lay silently beside his casket, standing guard one last time.

J.T. Tumilson’s legacy lives on—as a warrior, a son of Iowa, and a man who followed his calling with unwavering resolve.
