Captain Kid: Iowa vs. UAlbany, Aug. 30

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, a family farm in Iowa became the backdrop for a tragic accident that has reshaped the lives of young Nolan Brink and his family. The incident occurred on April 6, 2023, just days after Justine Brink celebrated her marriage to Adam Brink. The family was out checking field conditions when their utility task vehicle (UTV) overturned, ejecting both Nolan and his father, Adam.

Nolan sustained multiple severe injuries, leading to an urgent helicopter transport to an area hospital before being transferred to the University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital for specialized care. Medical professionals described his condition as a “polytrauma,” indicating serious injuries to various body parts. Among the most critical injuries were a fractured pelvis and extensive damage to his lower extremities.

Following an intense 15-hour surgery, which included reconstructive procedures to vital organs, Nolan faced an uphill battle for recovery. The severity of his injuries forced the family to confront the unimaginable—decisions about amputating his left leg below the knee and later removing the left side of his pelvis entirely due to the extent of the trauma.

During his 84-day hospitalization, Nolan underwent numerous treatments, including multiple surgeries to repair skin and tissue damage. The dedication and compassion displayed by the medical staff at the children’s hospital left a profound impact on the family, providing both physical care and emotional support during their darkest hours.

Now, at 9 years old and in fourth grade, Nolan is back at school, adapting to life with a prosthetic leg. His resilience shines through as he engages in activities like golf, boating, and showing cattle, bringing joy and laughter to those around him. The bond with his family has only grown stronger through this ordeal, as they navigate the complexities of recovery and healing together.

Nolan continues to receive care at Stead Family Children’s Hospital, where regular checkups help monitor his progress. The journey has been challenging, but the support from the community and the unwavering spirit of Nolan and his family serve as a beacon of hope in the face of adversity.
