Earlier this week, the City of Fairfield was named a Main Street Iowa community at a conference in Muscatine.

The announcement was made during the opening session of the 2025 Iowa Downtown Conference.

Mendy McAdams is Executive Director of the Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce. She was part of the committee that submitted the proposal to make Fairfield a Main Street Iowa community. After getting turned down in 2024, McAdams says the committee immediately went to work to apply again in 2025. She says that the committee received the good news last month but had to keep it under wraps.

“It is so hard to keep a secret. I wanted to shout it from the rooftop! We presented on July 10th and I got a call on July 13th [which they said] “You did it! I’m gonna send you some stuff but you can’t tell anybody [until] August 5th.”

A celebration of this achievement will take place in Fairfield’s Central Park on August 12th at 1:30 PM. Debi Durham, Director of Iowa Development and Economic Authority, will hold a press conference. Fairfield is the 54th Main Street Iowa community.

According to a press release, Fairfield plans to prioritize walkability and façade improvements; fill underused commercial spaces; mobilize volunteers; promote arts and culture; and reinforce downtown’s role as a destination for dining, shopping and connection as the newest Main Street Iowa community.
