Rickey “Rick” Bates, 67, of New Virginia, Iowa, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.
A devoted husband, loyal friend, and lifelong Harley Davidson enthusiast, Rick will be remembered for his big heart, quick wit, and unwavering love for his family and two dogs, Harley and BJ. Born on January 28, 1958, in Albia, Iowa, Rick grew up with a deep appreciation for life’s simple joys—family, freedom, and the open road. He spent many years working for Wright’s Tree Service who donated a lot of their services to natural disasters as well as their community. After many years of physical labor work, Rick then turned to Goodlife RV in Bevington, IA being a jack of all trades until his retirement in 2018.
Rick’s heart truly belonged to his beloved wife, Mary, with whom he shared 39 years of marriage before Mary’s passing in 2020. Their bond was unshakable and filled with laughter, loyalty, and endless love. Together they built a beautiful life helping those in need, enjoying the open road, and creating memories that will last forever. An avid Harley-Davidson rider, Rick found joy and peace behind the handlebars, with the wind in his face, and the open road ahead. He also had a special place in his heart for his dogs, who were always at his side and shared in the comfort and warmth of he and Mary’s home until their passings. He was the kind of man who made sure his loved ones knew how much they meant to him while also giving them a hard time by being ornery, one of his most memorable traits.
Rick is survived by his sister Debbie Field (John) Taylor, nieces Jennifer Brown (Brandy Booton) and Toni (Joe) Mincey, two aunts Linda Whitlock and Karen Johnannes, brother-in-law, Chuck (Shirley) Tyrrel, nephews Paul (Denise) Tyrrel and Matt (Jill) Tyrrel, many great nieces and nephews, and countless close friends. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary Bates, parents Dorothy and Kenny Bates, nephew Wayne Field, his faithful companions Harley and BJ.
A celebration of Rick’s life will be held at a later date. Friends and family will be invited to gather in remembrance to share stories and their love for Rick.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Welcome Home Solider monument in Albia, Iowa in Rick’s memory.
