An eastern Iowa cattle farmer says pasture conditions have been a pleasant surprise.
Lisa Kubik tells Brownfield, “Pastures look fantastic. The last three to four years we’ve definitely been lacking more and more each year as we get less and less rainfall.”
She says her area is no longer dealing with prolonged drought conditions because rains have been persistent this summer.
“We could shut the rain off anytime. As farmers we never want to say that because we could go two months then without rain, but we’re getting rain like crazy. Pastures are looking fantastic.”
But Kubik says hay has been a different story.
“It’s been really tough getting hay up,” she said. “I mean we could see a little bit of a shortage in quality feed coming into fall and winter.”
Kubik farms near Traer in Tama County.
