Des Moines police have arrested a man they say is behind an explosive device that was discovered at Waveland Golf Course.
Michael James Valento, 41, was taken into custody early Friday morning, just after midnight. Investigators believe he planted and detonated a pipe bomb-style device at the golf course on July 3.
Then, about a week later—on Thursday—police say a second device was found in the same area. Bomb Squad technicians with the Des Moines Police Department responded and confirmed it was a live explosive. Rather than risk moving it, they safely detonated it right there on site.
Valento is now facing several charges, including:
- Two counts of possession of an explosive or incendiary device with intent
- First-degree arson
- Third-degree arson
- Having control of a firearm or offensive weapon as a domestic abuse offender
He’s currently being held in the Polk County Jail.
The investigation is still ongoing, and police are asking anyone who might have seen or heard something unusual around the time of the explosions to contact them.
No injuries were reported in connection with either device, but neighbors and golfers say the whole situation has left them shaken.
