The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Watch for the entire state of Iowa, in effect from Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening, as a powerful heat wave moves into the region. Temperatures are expected to soar, with heat index values potentially reaching between 105 and 110 degrees. These dangerously hot and humid conditions significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for vulnerable populations.
The extreme heat will begin building across Iowa on Friday and is expected to intensify through the weekend. Forecasters warn that the sweltering conditions may persist into early next week, with little relief during the overnight hours, which could add to the cumulative stress on the body.
Health officials are urging residents to take precautions. People who work outdoors, as well as the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing medical conditions, are at the highest risk. Everyone is encouraged to stay well-hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, and spend time in air-conditioned spaces when possible. It’s also important to check on neighbors, especially the elderly and those living alone, and never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.
