Moravia Fire & Rescue, along with crews from Moulton, Mystic, and Centerville, held a training burn last Saturday at an abandoned home on South Trussell Street. The century-old house, once owned by the Campbell family, was donated for the exercise by sisters Marcia Benjamin and Marchelle Brown, who had deep ties to the property. Four new Moravia firefighters and a junior firefighter got hands-on experience in smoke-filled conditions. Brown said her late father, a founding member of the department, would’ve been proud to see the home used for such important training.
Four of Moravia’s new firefighters—Cameron Nicoletto, Aiden and Conner Golston, and Creighton Mihalovich—along with junior firefighter Carson Seals, participated in their first live fire exercise. Crews practiced working in low-visibility conditions with breathing gear before setting the structure ablaze for additional fire control training.
Brown noted that their father, Friz Walter, was a founding member of Moravia’s fire department, and said he would have been proud to see the home used to train the next generation.
