Ottumwa Woman Accused of Stealing $32,000 from Non-Profit

Police say an Ottumwa woman stole thousands of dollars from a local non-profit for four years.

45-year-old Evelyn Rivera-Colon has been charged with first-degree theft, a Class C felony, and ongoing criminal conduct, a Class B felony.

According to court records, from 2020 to 2024, Rivera-Colon was an employee of the Family Crisis Center in Ottumwa and was in charge of the organization’s funds. Officials say Rivera-Colon used her position to misappropriate Family Crisis Center funds to pay her family’s bills.

Rivera-Colon is accused of stealing $32,000 over the four years. According to its website, Family Crisis Center is a non-profit that provides domestic abuse assistance, sexual assault crisis support, safety, and advocacy to 12 counties in southeastern Iowa.

A warrant for Rivera-Colon’s arrest was issued on May 1st, and she was taken into custody the following day.

Rivera-Colon was transported to the Wapello County Jail and freed after posting a $20,000 bond. Her first court appearance is scheduled for May 13th.
