May expected to start warm and dry

Much of the Midwest should experience warm and dry weather the first week of May.

Iowa state climatologist Justin Glisan says there’s a strong warm signal expanding from the central and western Corn Belt.

“That strong warm signal does persist and it does expand across much of the Midwest and Upper Midwest. And then you look at the temperature (and) what we look at in terms of precipitation chances (and) we do see a drier signal forming”.

He tells Brownfield early weather models for June, July and August show a slight warm and dry lean as well.

“Now, we have seen improvement with an active March and early April across much of the ag belt. Drought conditions west to central, getting into Iowa, we’re working off those longer-term deficits as well.”

Glisan says some portions of the Upper Midwest have endured their longest droughts since the 1950’s.
