JJ’s Tavern + Grill in Ankeny has permanently closed its doors, just over a year after winning one of Iowa’s most prestigious food honors. The restaurant earned the title of Iowa’s Best Burger in 2024 from the Iowa Beef Industry Council, thanks to standout menu items like the JJ’s Smash Burger, the jalapeño cheddar burger, and the Brock Curdy Burger, named after former Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy.
The owners shared the news of the closure with a message of gratitude, thanking both loyal customers and dedicated staff for their support and contributions. They emphasized that while the restaurant is closing, the relationships and memories built during its run will remain.
JJ’s became a favorite for burger lovers across the state, and its recognition last year put it firmly on the culinary map. Its sudden closure is a reminder of the tough realities facing many restaurants, even those that receive critical acclaim.
This year, Halftime Bar & Grill in Pleasantville takes the spotlight as the newest winner of Iowa’s Best Burger.
