Healthcare workers from six River Hills Community Health Centers across south-central Iowa gathered Wednesday morning in a unified show of support for unionization. The rally, organized under the name River Hills United, brought together employees demanding improved working conditions, better patient care, equitable wages, and affordable healthcare coverage for themselves and their families.
These workers, many of whom serve vulnerable and underserved populations, say they are facing increasing challenges in delivering the level of care their patients deserve. Concerns have been growing over administrative decisions that staff believe prioritize financial gain over the wellbeing of patients and workers alike. Employees say this has created an environment where morale is low and burnout is high.
By joining forces with over 1,500 healthcare workers from UnityPoint who are also organizing through the Teamsters union, River Hills employees are seeking a stronger voice in shaping their workplace conditions. The movement reflects a growing trend in healthcare where frontline workers are pushing back against corporate structures in pursuit of a more supportive and sustainable work environment.
As unionization efforts continue, the workers say their ultimate goal is not just to improve their own livelihoods, but to ensure every patient receives the quality care they deserve.
