The president of the Illinois Fertilizer & Chemical Association says a recent trip to Capitol Hill doesn’t leave him optimistic for a 2025 farm bill.
KJ Johnson says Congress has a full agenda.
“There’s a lot of conversation about the farm bill, but when does it actually happen?” He says, “The biggest thing most people are talking about is the tax cuts do end. That is going to be the first thing on the docket for this Congress.”
He says the results of the tax cut discussion are likely to influence the details of a farm bill.
“There probably is going to be some cuts in the budget and the farm bill with some of these tax cuts being looked at.” He says, “How deep those are? We’ll see.”
Johnson also tells Brownfield, “Most farm bills happen in election years.” He says, “Being an off-election year, I don’t know if there’s the political push to get it done this year. I hope it gets done.”
Johnson says lawmakers must also come to agreement on a new government funding bill ahead of the March 14th shutdown deadline.
