UPDATE: The Appanoose County Sheriff’s Office identified the drowning victim as 17-year-old Aysen Beeson of Centerville. He was a 2024 graduate of Centerville High School.
A teenager drowned while swimming in Rathbun Lake, according to the Appanoose County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Gary Anderson says at approximately 6:13 PM on Wednesday, June 26, his office received a call that a 17-year-old male swimmer went under the water near the Buck Creek swimming beach and did not resurface.
Emergency crews responded and the swimmer’s body was recovered an hour later by the Appanoose County Water Rescue Team. The male juvenile was pronounced dead at the scene by the Appanoose County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The name of the drowning victim has been withheld, pending family notification according to Anderson.
Anderson says the incident remains under investigation.
