An Ottumwa man faces charges after allegedly carrying a backpack with controlled substances and resisting an officer during the arrest.

35-year-old Stephen Paulos was charged with Interference with Official Acts causing Injury and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

On June 11, police say Paulos was being placed under arrest for a valid arrest warrant. According to court records, Paulos was wearing a backpack that police searched and found a glass smoking pipe, two homemade smoking pipes, and a digital scale. Residue of methamphetamine was found on all of these items.

Court records say Paulos was resisting his arrest by tensing his body and pulling away from the officer. When he was told he was under arrest, Paulos said, “you’ll have to make me.” An officer reportedly suffered an abrasion on his shin while taking Paulos to the ground.

Paulos was taken to the Wapello County Jail. He is being held without bond pending a hearing with a magistrate judge.
