Statewide Tornado Drill Scheduled for Wednesday With Local Exceptions

As part of Severe Weather Awareness Week, a statewide tornado drill will take place at 10:00 AM on Wednesday.

However, Wapello County Emergency Management Coordinator Tim Richmond says due to the anticipated freezing temperatures, the outdoor sirens in Agency, Eldon, and the Cardinal Community School District campus will not be activated during the drill. The sirens in Ottumwa will still operate.

The National Weather Service encourages residents to have a family plan which includes an emergency meeting place and related information. If you live in a mobile home or home without a basement, identify a nearby safe building you can get to quickly, such as a church or family member.

Also, pick a safe room in your home, such as a basement, storm cellar, or an interior room on the lowest floor with no windows.

Wednesday’s tornado drill is expected to last 5 to 15 minutes.
