OTTUMWA, IA – Whatsoever You Do women’s and children’s shelter is now officially open.

The announcement was made Tuesday on the organization’s Facebook page.

The shelter located at 105 South Iowa Avenue in Ottumwa, is not a walk-in shelter Those needing assistance will need to schedule intake may call Mary Margaret Butler at 641-226-7684 or Leslie at 641-455-8334.

New intakes are scheduled from 3-5 pm everyday but Sundays. All admitted residents can return to shelter from 3 pm until 8 pm daily. Those who are scheduled for intake need to enter through the far left door off Iowa Avenue and ring the doorbell.

The shelter closes during day hours, after breakfast until 3 pm as long as buses are running. This is the time residents need to accomplish their tasks to get back on their feet. This is also the time our volunteers can attend meetings, classes and spend time with family.

On weekends, the shelter is all day, provided there are enough volunteers to cover shifts. Bus service is not available on those days.

During the night hours, the doors will not be opened for the safety of the residents and volunteer staff. In some instances, there may be exceptions if staff is made aware of the situation. Residents that work will be able to enter with prior approval.

The warming shelter is always open when wind chill values reach -24 or below. Men, women and children are welcome during this time.

Whatsoever You Do has the right to refuse entry to anyone who may pose a danger to our residents and volunteers.
