Police: Former Employee Stole 733 Lottery Tickets

A former gas station employee is accused of committing a series of lottery ticket thefts, totaling $60,000 stolen from the store and the Iowa Lottery.

39-year-old Heather Wilson of Ottumwa was charged with ongoing criminal conduct (Class B felony), two counts of first-degree theft (Class C felony), and eight counts of lottery fraud (Class D felony). Wilson worked at the Elliot Oil BP gas station on Albia Road in Ottumwa.

According to court records, throughout October 2023, Wilson executed fraudulent item returns, stole 733 lottery tickets, and cashed in the winning tickets. Wilson allegedly took money from the cash till during these incidents.

Police say Wilson’s actions were caught on store security cameras.

A warrant for Wilson’s arrest was issued on Tuesday and she was taken into custody later that day.

Wilson was transported to the Wapello County Jail and later released after posting a $25,000 bond.
