Multiple crews battled a field fire on Tuesday night.

At approximately 8:00 PM, the Ottumwa Fire Department and the Wapello County Rural Fire Department were called to the fields on the east end of Ottumwa across from JBS. A fire started in the weeds and was quickly spreading due to high winds.

According to multiple reports, Tim Richmond, Wapello County Emergency Management Coordinator said it took crews an hour to get the blaze under control. As a precaution, firefighters closely monitored the fire to ensure it did not spread into a residential area.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
